Capitol Outdoors' Adventure on Spring Lake

Capitol Outdoors' Adventure on Spring Lake

Spring Lake, Manito IllinoisLike many anglers the weekend is a time to get out and do some fishing.  Over the past two weeks, and now on it's third week, the rain has been a constant reminder of mother nature's balance.  Rivers, lakes and city sewers are over flowing with water, which leaves the question for a lot of people, where to go fishing?

If you're thinking of any river, you're crazy.  Regardless if your on the Des Plains, Fox, Walbash, Ohio, or Illinois River, it's extremely dangerous as these waters are way up.  Granted you could do some backwater fishing in flood areas for catfish but, for a lot of anglers the river is off limits.  Illinois has an abundance of lakes with excellent fishing opportunities.

This past weekend Capitol Outdoors took an adventure to Spring Lake which is located just outside Manito, Illinois.  This lake has two parts to it.  There's the North Unit and then there is the South Unit.  We decided to fish the north unit.

After taking a couple wrong turns, we finally launched the boat and hit the water.  First, to my surprise was the amount of lily pads this lake had.  It felt like we were down in Florida fishing the marshes.  The second surprise was how weedy the rest of the lake was.  You see, Spring Lake is reclaimed wetlands and isn't very deep.

Never the less without knowing any of the hot spots we knew it was going to be a long day looking for some bass.  On our way to the far north end I began thinking what to throw and what presentation we are going to use.

After our boat ride we started fishing and caught a few little ones.  Honestly, it was a little disappointing because Spring Lake is known to have some nice bass, muskies and pike.  The action was slow, as you can tell in our video, but we were able to take some nice pictures, enjoy a boat ride and have a nice day out on the water. At the end of the day, that's what it's all about.

We enjoyed our time, experience and found a new place to fish.  It takes years to learn a new lake.  We are thankful that we have such a variety of lakes to choose from.  Continue to check back with Capitol Outdoors because this will not be the last adventure we have on Spring Lake.
